Studying a Stellar Peanut: A Binary Analysis of KIC 7766185

POSTER

Abstract

We present the first in-depth photometric and spectroscopic study of the W UMa star KIC 7766185. Spectroscopic observations obtained by the Mayall 4-m telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory were used to compute radial velocities of the component stars. With the radial velocities and Kepler photometry, we performed binary modeling in PHOEBE to determine orbital and stellar parameters, including component masses and equivalent radii, semi-major axis, inclination, fillout factor and temperature ratio. The determined parameters confirm KIC 7766175 as an A-type W UMa star which is currently in a weak contact state. In addition to the binary analysis, a period study was conducted which revealed a potential small period decrease.

Publication: The results presented in this poster will be submitted for publication. We plan to submit to Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific with the same name as the poster. We are still working on the paper so we have not made any final decisions on where/when to submit for publication.
