Superconductivity and strong electronic interactions in a moiré quasicrystal – part 1

Abstract

A central theme in quantum materials research is to understand systems in which interactions between electrons dominate. While periodic and disordered systems have been extensively studied in this context, interactions in quasiperiodic crystals – systems that lack periodicity but maintain long-range order – are much less understood. Here, by twisting three layers of graphene, forming two incommensurate moiré patterns, we demonstrate a new type of emergent quasicrystalline system – a moiré quasicrystal. Crucially, our structure inherits flat electronic dispersion and highly tunable electronic properties from the parent moiré systems, allowing us to engineer quasiperiodicity for interacting electronic phenomena at relevant energy scales.
