Current Challenges for Data Science and Trustworthy AI in Industry and Government

Abstract
The rapid development and adoption of AI has major ramifications for industry and government. AI is an increasing factor and component of national and economic development, national security, healthcare, education, financial services, transportation, agriculture and many other industries. AI played a key role in the COVID-19 response though Lancet in a 2021 editorial asked “Artificial intelligence for COVID-19: saviour or saboteur?”.
The talk reviews some of the latest innovations in AI across a range of applications and industries, current policy and regulatory challenges in areas such as AI explainability, bias and privacy; intellectual property and AI generated works; and liability for AI such as for autonomous surgery and vehicles. The talk concludes by reviewing some of the new Trustworthy and Ethical AI frameworks including development in the U.S. and European Union.
