Nb surface encapsulation to improve resonators quality factor

ORAL

Abstract

Nb qubits relaxation time are limited by the Nb2O5 layer at the metal air interface. This study is aimed to limit the formation of the oxide layer, encapsulating the Nb surface with other superconducting materials such as Ta, TiN and Re or with dielectric materials. To better understand the results, we are realizing these studies on coplanar waveguide resonators where the relation between surface losses and quality factor is clear.

In this work we present the results obtained on resonators encapsulated with different superconducting materials and the improvement we obtained on the quality factor.
