Structural transformation determination in Sodium Chloride during shock compression and release

POSTER

Abstract

Sodium chloride (NaCl) is a fundamental ionic solid of significant interest for high-pressure science, geoscience, and dynamic compression studies. The B1-B2 phase transition shown by NaCl occurs widely among binary compounds and thus NaCl is used as a model system for understanding the rich physics behind these types of phase transitions. In this work, we shock compressed and released the single-crystal NaCl [100] samples to study the B1↔B2 phase transitions over nanosecond timescales at the X-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) facility at LCLS. Both solid-solid (B1→B2) and solid-liquid (B2→melt) phase transitions have been observed along the shock Hugoniot. A multi-phase equation-of-state (EOS) description of NaCl is incorporated into a one-dimensional hydrocode (HYADES) and is used to interpret the pressure evolution inside the sample over these rapid timescales. To constrain the phase diagram of NaCl at high pressure (P) and high-temperature (T), we combine the measured crystal structures and density with the calculated EOS and determine a P-T path consistent with the reported Hugoniot data.
