John Wheatley Award: Advancement of physics and science in developing countries
Invited
Abstract
I will outline the case for the importance of promoting science
in developing countries. Based on my own experience over many years,
including my 10 year tenure as former Director of ICTP, I will share the
challenges and opportunities that the physics community working in both
developing and developed countries has in order to improve the scientific
level of all countries. I will emphasise the efforts to provide
opportunities to the young generations of scientists from developing
countries to have access to a high level of education and a productive
career, hopefully in their home countries. The role of international
scientific institutions will be highlighted.
