Abstract
In the course of trying to engineer proteins to have a particular function, unexpected behaviours sometimes arise. I will describe how following up on some odd behaviour observed while trying to engineer photoactive yellow protein as a light-controlled switch, led to interesting, perhaps, general new insights into the behavior of these remarkable moelcules
