Mitigation techniques used in Magneto Inertial Fusion
POSTER
Abstract
Ignition was demonstrated for the first time in the laboratory at the National Ignition Facility (NIF). This feat has served as a crucial step for advancement of fusion energy as a means of sustainable energy. On NIF, a large number of laser beams are used to compress and heat the fuel to achieve ignition. Magneto Inertial Fusion serves as a viable alternative for sustainable energy. With Magneto Inertial Fusion, we can readily impose parameters, such as magnetic fields, that foster more efficient reactions. However, mitigation of the Magneto Rayleigh Taylor Instability (MRTI) is one of the biggest challenges. We used an axial magnetic field to suppress MRTI. We will present a quantitative analysis of instabilities with and without an axial magnetic field.
