Focused Energy's Perspective on Germany's Laser Fusion Approach
ORAL
Abstract
... for the entire Focused Energy Team
With the demonstration of ignition and gain in laser fusion the political and funding situation in Germany has changed dramatically for the better. Germany’s new federal government has agreed on a contract of topics, which includes one statement that Germany becomes the first nation using fusion power as a strategic energy source. The underlying idea is to tender out two fusion pilot plants by the government, one using magnetic confinement fusion (MCF) and one using inertial confinement fusion (ICF). While the state of Bavaria in Germany has begun to focus on the development of an MCF-based concept, likely using stellarator technology, the state of Hesse has already publicly stated that it aims for becoming the nations powerhouse in laser fusion energy.
To support this strategy, Focused Energy is leading a consortium of key industrial players, supported by the state government to transform a former nuclear fission power plant site into a laser fusion research campus to jointly develop and construct facilities leading to an ICF fusion pilot plant.
We will present Focused Energy’s roadmap, partners, strategy, and efforts to build a fusion power plant within these boundary conditions. Focused Energy is strongly committed to its international partners and seeks further partnerships to jointly work on this exciting enterprise.
