Raman Amplification with an Intense Seed

Abstract

We present experimental results from the Raman amplification experimental platform at the University of Rochester's Laboratory for Laser Energetics. This platform explores Raman amplification in a unique parameter space which includes a multi-joule pump, varying plasma temperatures, and an adjustable-energy, intense seed. Experiments demonstrate more than 220 mJ energy transfer from the pump to the seed. For a fixed pump intensity or power, the pump energy transferred to the seed scales with the pump spot size. Single-pass efficiencies > 8% are measured, and pulse duration measurements of the amplified seed show temporal compression.
