Benchmarking and Optimization of CPD Tokamak Scenarios using TRIASSIC

POSTER

Abstract

The Compact Pilot Device (CPD) is a high magnetic field and medium-size tokamak designed to utilize high-energy neutral beam injection (NBI), targeting a fusion energy gain of Q > 5 as a step towards net electricity generation in Korea. Baseline scenarios for CPD at various NBI powers (30 MW, 60 MW, 100 MW) have been developed using the system code, FUSE [1], which integrates multiple surrogate models to efficiently enable comprehensive parameter scans. To enhance the accuracy and credibility of these scenarios, physics-based, higher-fidelity integrated modeling has been carried out using TRIASSIC framework [2]. TRIASSIC incorporates sophisticated models, including TGLF [3] for anomalous transport, NCLASS [4] for neo-classical transport, and NUBEAM [5] for simulating heating, momentum and current drive by both NBI and alpha particles. In this work, kinetic profiles and plasma performance results obtained from the FUSE are systematically benchmarked against predictions from TRIASSIC. Further optimization of CPD scenarios is achieved by varying key parameters such as beam injection geometry, density profile shape, ion species compositions and pedestal conditions. Additionally, sensitivity analyses are performed to assess robustness and operational stability. The outcomes of these integrated simulations help define operational boundaries for stability analysis and provide guidance for engineering designs considerations.
