ICRH Modeling in Mirror and Dipole Geometries

Abstract

We have adapted the all-orders spectral algorithm (AORSA) RF code [ E. F. Jaeger et al, Phys. Plasmas 8 (2001)] from tokamak geometry to axisymmetric magnetic mirror and dipole geometries. We have use AORSA to study ion cyclotron range of frequency heating in the Wisconsin HTS Axisymmetric Mirror (WHAM) and Realta proposed scenarios on mirror devices [D. Endrizzi et al, J. Plasma Phys 89 (2023)] and the OpenStar levitated dipole [R. Mataira-Cole, et al, GO05.00011 at 66th APS-DPP]. In mirror levitated dipole devices there is no azimuthal current and only poloidal fields. In both types, there is no (or very little) toroidal magnetic field and several cyclotron harmonics close to HTS coils. The ICRF power will be used in WHAM to accelerate high-energy neutral beam injection ions by ion cyclotron absorption between the second to fourth harmonics of deuterium or tritium. At these harmonics, full wave simulations most accurately capture wave propagation, including transmission, reflection, and absorption at the cyclotron layer. The antenna is modeled as a single-strap with m = 0 excitation, where m is the azimuthal mode number. For the dipole the antenna also is m=0. Scenarios considered for the dipole are beach heating, minority and harmonic heating. We present some preliminary results for wave coupling and heating and effects on the distribution function modeled by the CQL3D-M Fokker-Planck code [R.W. Harvey, Yu.V. Petrov, C.B. Forest, AIP Conf. Proc. 1771, 040002 (2016)].
