Progress developing a Thomson scattering diagnostic for CMFX
POSTER
Abstract
Understanding the evolution of plasma density and temperature profiles is essential for comprehending the processes within thermonuclear fusion experiments like the Centrifugal Mirror Fusion Experiment (CMFX). We present our design of a ND:YAG 1064 nm laser setup, which enables the measurement of the highest temperatures and densities at various points along the radial profile by passing the beam through the central plane of the experiment. The collection optics include an adjustable aperture, a lens that focuses the light onto an optical fiber bundle for easy alignment, and a polychromator provided by MIT that was used for measuring densities and temperatures at the edge of Alcator C-Mod. The polychromator allows us to reconstruct temperature within the expected range, minimizing error accurately. The system also comprises a data acquisition system and software for system control and data processing. In addition, we present measurements of a wide range of spectra of radiation from the plasma using spectrometry and video cameras. Once implemented, this diagnostic tool will enable direct localized measurements of plasma electron temperature and density in CMFX for the first time.
