First Successful Thor DT Ignition Shot

ORAL

Abstract

The THOR (Thinned hohlraum optimization for radflow) first DT shot successfully ignited with two opposing windows with asymmetric thicknesses of 2.3mm and 2.8mm. DANTE-2 shields, which were developed on prior 2DConA shots, block the view of other sources to enable DANTE-2 to record the window emission. This additionally required the development of taller ASGARD shrouds. The goal of the first DT shot was to maintain ignition with all of these target modifications and capture data on resulting capsule asymmetries and performance degradation. The authorized yield was 2.4+0.9MJ yield, with a ~9% x-ray loss through the windows. The eventual goal of the THOR campaign will be to provide a platform to perform radiation flow and opacity experiments using the x-ray flash from an igniting capsule.
