Composite liners for flux leakage and manufacturability in pulsed magnetic fusion

ORAL

Abstract

Here we discuss the application of liners composed of a conducting outer layer and insulating inner layer, called composite liners, for application in pulsed magnetic fusion targets. This configuration provides two primary advantages over traditional solid metal liners: 1) The insulating layer allows magnetic flux from the driver to leak into the interior of the target, allowing for in-situ magnetization and energization of the DT fuel, which can be controlled by tailoring the thickness of the metallic layer, and 2) the use of insulating materials dramatically increases the range of material and manufacturing options available. Additionally, insulating materials offer opportunities for higher density with lower atomic number than available metals, potentially providing improved confinement, reduced mix, and lower opacity. These two properties combined offer target designers a new set of tools for tailoring implosion performance. We discuss the implosion stability of composite liners as well as the efficacy, timing, and control of flux leakage.
