Time-dependent integrated plasma-scenario modelling for Tokamak Energy's Fusion Pilot Plant
ORAL
Abstract
This presentation continues a series of talks describing the status of the preconceptual design for Tokamak Energy's fusion pilot plant. After going through a number of iterations, the present design point has been chosen, featuring a major radius of 5.0 m, aspect ratio 2.3, and toroidal magnetic field of 5.25 T at geometric axis. In this talk, we shall present time-dependent integrated modelling of plasma ramp-up and sustainment scenarios for this final design point. At the pre-conceptual stage, ramp-up simulations are performed to validate coil capacity and placement, as well as the choice of heating and current drive mix. In this talk we will outline the different ramp-up philosophies that were considered, at multiple levels of modelling fidelity, and provide our recommended approach for the preconceptual design. We will describe the interplay between the chosen ramp-up philosophy and the heating & current drive mix, and we will highlight particularly influential physics uncertainties in the integrated modelling framework that should be addressed in next-step devices and theoretical research.
