Studies of multi-ion and kinetic effects in shock-driven implosions with mid-Z gas fills at OMEGA

ORAL

Abstract

Shock-driven implosions with mid-Z gas fills are an excellent platform for studies of multi-ion and kinetic dynamics in High-Energy-Density (HED) regimes. Three classes of shock-driven implosions with low to mid-Z gas fills were executed with different initial fill densities to achieve varying Knudsen numbers. The ratio of experimentally observed yields to the simulated values uniformly decreased with increasing Knudsen number. Experimentally observed ion temperatures scaled with the average Z of the capsule gas fill, symptomatic of possible ion thermal decoupling. In this presentation, the experimental data are contrasted to hydrodynamic and kinetic simulations to quantify the extent and time-evolution of multi-ion and kinetic effects throughout the course of an implosion.
