Integrated modeling of axisymmetric mirrors

Abstract

We present a first of a kind integrated model for the axisymmetric magnetic mirror. This model, using simulations driven by the integrated plasma simulator (IPS), can evaluate the transport of magnetic mirrors with integrated simulations including the CQL3D-m Fokker-Planck transport code, the Pleiades equilibrium code, and heating codes such as GENRAY and FIDASIM. After completing a simulation, the model can export equilibrium plasma conditions to several different MHD and kinetic stability codes such as hybrid-VPIC for further evaluation. Here, we use this model to evaluate the plasmas in the Wisconsin Axisymmetric High-Temperature Superconducting Mirror, WHAM, and to investigate the plasma performance of next step mirror devices.

Publication: At least three publications related to this submission are planned. Those currently in preparation are on: integrated modeling of WHAM, integrated modeling of next-step mirrors, and on DCLC stability in WHAM.
