A path towards experimentally validated implosion designs for future inertial confinement fusion facilities

Abstract

The achievement of ignition in the laboratory has renewed interest in defining the requirements for a future high-gain inertial-confinement fusion (ICF) facility. 3-D simulations have the potential to provide quantitative predictions of future implosion performance, but their high computational cost prohibits their use in practical design studies. We develop a hierarchical approach where 3-D radiation hydrodynamic simulations and experimental measurements are used to train a 3-D degradation model in a 1-D code, which can then be used to rapidly search for interesting regions of design space.
