International Public Engagement in Fusion: Leveraging the PPPL-IAEA practical arrangement in plasma and fusion energy engagement

POSTER

Abstract

In 2022, the Princeton Plasma Physics Lab (PPPL) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) signed a practical arrangement focused on public engagement in the fields of plasma science and fusion energy. This arrangement allowed PPPL to expand its successful domestic science education and public engagement activities while supporting IAEA's broad international focus and reach. In this presentation, we will highlight the PPPL-IAEA activities carried out under this arrangement, including: Guest speakers at the Introduction to Plasma and Fusion Course, organizing and moderating 2 panels a the 2023 Fusion Energy Conference focused on Public Engagement and Energy Justice, participation and topical expansion of the Plasma Physics and Fusion Energy School at the International Center for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), and more. We will also present current initiatives, led by PPPL, IAEA, and the University of Wisconsin, to identify and incorporate into the mainstream fusion community current and budding fusioneers in the global south; as well as identify and create resources to support the integration of these communities into our global fusion efforts.
