A Software Framework to Rapidly Determine the Onset of ITG Turbulence for Stellarator Optimization

Abstract

Many of the software tools scientists use to understand stellarators are disconnected and computationally intensive. To combat this, we are working to "pipeline" together a set of fast stellarator codes to calculate properties such as magnetohydrodynamic equilibria, transport, turbulence, and the threshold for turbulence for a given device. In particular, we will concentrate on measuring the onset of Ion Temperature Gradient (ITG) turbulence via an optimized calculation of the linear critical gradient. Additionally, we hope to code intermediate scripts to allow this pipeline to be executed from Python. As we expand this framework, we will introduce additional codes in parallel, facilitating further customization and broader application. We hope this new software framework will accelerate the plasma community's understanding of stellarator turbulence, transport, and stability. With this tool in hand, we expect to develop new stellarator geometries with favorable properties.
