Probing 40Sc Level Structure to constrain the ³⁹Ca(p,γ)⁴⁰Sc for x-ray burst
ORAL
Abstract
X-ray bursts are rapid thermonuclear flashes that occur on the surface of accreting neutron stars, typically lasting only a few seconds. The reaction 39Ca(p,γ)40Sc has been shown to influence X-ray burst light curves and burst ashes. Currently, there is an order-of-magnitude uncertainty in this reaction rate. We are planning on constraining this reaction rate via investigation on the excited states of 40Sc populated through 40Ca(3He, t)40Sc. This study utilized GODDESS, a barrel of silicon detectors known as ORRUBA to detect tritons, alongside a gamma sphere to detect gamma-rays from 40Sc. Details of experimental set-up and preliminary results from data analysis will be presented.
