The Berkeley Atlas - a database of neutron-induced gamma-ray production cross sections at 14 MeV

ORAL

Abstract

We report first results from an ongoing experimental campaign to make new cross section measurements for (n,nā€²š›¾) reactions from 14 MeV neutrons on a several dozen different isotopes, including for the elements C, N, O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, S, Cl, K, Ca, Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Zr, and Pb. Our high-precision measurements are achieved with a novel approach that uses a deuterium-tritium neutron generator paired with associated particle imaging and an array consistenting of four high-purity germanium detectors and two scintillators (LaBr3 and CeBr3). Cross section measurements were made at four different angles to provide angular distributions for the cross sections. The data will be presented, along with a comparison of angular distributions amongst the different samples and a comparison to predictions from the TALYS reaction code. Our measurements have the advantage of providing cross section data for a variety of isotopes, made with an identical experimental setup. The isotopes were chosen based on their importance for homeland security, nuclear safeguards, and planetary science applications. Our measurements will contribute to improving gamma-ray production evaluations for the ENDF library, thereby supporting a broad range of applications within the nuclear science community.
