Remembering Robert Vandenbosch and Victor Viola: pioneers in nuclear fission - Part 1

ORAL · Invited

Abstract

Two key figures in the field of nuclear fission, Robert Vandenbosch, from University of Washington and Victor Viola, from Indiana University, passed away this year. Professor Vandenbosch was the lead author of the seminal book Nuclear Fission, together with John Huizenga, still regarded as the most comprehensive review of the fission process, and Nuclear Waste Stalemate, together with Susanne Vandenbosch, which addresses the complex and timely discussions surrounding nuclear waste management amid renewed interest in nuclear power. Professor Viola is best known for developing the renowned Viola Systematics, a crucial tool used by nearly all scientists studying fission processes. Here, former students of Professors Vandenbosch and Viola will reflect on their profound contributions to nuclear fission, their broader impact on nuclear science, education, and society, and offer personal insights into their lives and legacies.
