LEGEND-1000: A Tonne-scale Search for Neutrinoless Double-beta Decay in 76Ge
ORAL
Abstract
The LEGEND Collaboration proposes the construction of LEGEND-1000, a ton-scale Large Enriched Germanium Experiment for Neutrinoless Double Beta (ββ) Decay. LEGEND-1000 will consist of 1000 kg of germanium detectors, enriched to ≥ 90% in 76Ge, operated in a liquid argon active shield at an underground laboratory in Italy (LNGS). The experiment is designed to probe ββ decay with discovery sensitivity to 76Ge half-lives beyond 1028 years. LEGEND-1000 will perform a quasi-background-free search and can make an unambiguous discovery of ββ decay for an effective neutrino mass above 9-21 meV. It builds on the experience from the precursor LEGEND-200, MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR, and GERDA experiments. LEGEND-1000 is currently scheduled to start data-taking in 2030.This talk will review the design and status of LEGEND-1000.
