Permanent magnet atom trap prototyping for Project-8

Abstract
Project 8 aims to measure the absolute mass of the neutrino to 40 meV/c2 resolution using cyclotron radiation emission spectroscopy. To reach the targeted resolution, ~5e18 tritium atoms must be stored inside the cavity region at an optimal density. A cubic-meter scale magneto-gravitational trap will be used to confine the milli-kelvin spin polarized atoms. Design options include superconducting wire Ioffe traps and permanent magnet Halbach style traps. This talk will illustrate magnetic field simulations of a high order multipole permanent magnet trap with a compatible endcap design. Preliminary results for fabricating custom permanent magnets with samarium cobalt powder and cryogenic epoxy will be discussed.
