Progress towards a new 129Xe EDM measurement

ORAL

Abstract

Preparations are underway for a new measurement of the 129Xe EDM at LANL, in which we will measure the precession frequencies of 3He and 129Xe in an applied electric field, using a SQUID read-out. I describe the current status of the project and our near-term plans, with a focus on the aspects that stand to be significant advances over previous work. In particular, we are developing a novel configuration for coupling the spins into the SQUID that suppresses environmental noise; a recirculating xenon/helium optical pumping system for high measurement duty cycle and gas conservation; an improved high-voltage design for significantly higher electric fields; and a multi-pronged approach to extending the phase coherence of the nuclear spins using quantum information techniques.
