REU: Research in Symmetries at the University of Kentucky--Lessons Learned
ORAL
Abstract
The University of Kentucky Department of Physics and Astronomy has offered an NSF-funded REU program targeting participants in Rural Kentucky and Central Appalachia for four years. It is based on the loose theme of symmetry which relates diverse research topics ranging from nuclear- to astro-physics. In addition to immersive research, the program offers daily classes, skills-based workshops, scientific seminars, professional development training, and an extensive social program to foster an inclusive identity as scientists and help participants understand the scientific process. The reach has expanded via alternate sources of funding and remote participation. We have overcome various educational, social, and logistical challenges in establishing this program through assessment-based refinements.
