Status of the QCD phase diagram from the Lattice

Abstract

Lattice QCD suffers from the so-called sign problem, which prohibits straightforward Monte Carlo simulations once there is a non-vanishing chemical potential for baryon density. Several approximate methods have been devised to circumvent this problem, which are valid for chemical potentials smaller than temperature. I review the information obtained by these methods on the QCD phase diagram and discuss recent progress towards larger chemical potentials by means of an effective theory.
