Turbulence Control using Structured Porous Materials: Model-Guided Material Development

ORAL

Abstract

Structured porous materials have the potential to passively control wall-bounded turbulent flows for applications ranging from noise and drag reduction to separation delay. This talk will describe progress towards the development of reduced complexity models that can predict the impact of porous materials with specified interfacial slip and admittance on wall-bounded turbulent flows across flow configurations and regimes. While these models can rapidly identify desirable interfacial slip and admittance, significant challenges remain in the design of porous geometries that exhibit such boundary conditions. Ongoing work on the development of experimental systems capable of high-throughput material design, fabrication, and characterization will also be presented.
