Characteristics of Wakes from 3D Rotating Ellipsoids using Nonconforming Schwarz-SEM

POSTER

Abstract

Vortex shedding and the related added-mass effect’s impact on drag and lift felt by rotating spherical and ellipsoidal bodies moving in flows at moderate Reynold’s numbers has been recently quantified using a novel moving nonconforming Schwarz-spectral element method. In the current study we focus on the characteristics of the vortices generated by rotating ellipsoids of different aspect-ratios, using direct numerical simulations (DNS). We capture the toroidal vortices generated, whose shape changes based on the aspect ratio of the ellipsoid. Significant difference in the wake is observed between the rotating and non-rotating case.
