Freezing splashes
ORAL
Abstract
Usually, spreading of the drop is observed at low velocity, and splashing above a threshold velocity that depends on the drop geometry, fluids properties and substrate conditions.
In the present study, we investigate how this splashing velocity evolves for water drops impact on a solid substrate, when varying the substrate temperature. While a small variations are
observed for subtrate temperature above the freezing one of water (0° C), a rapid decrease of the threshold is noticed for sub-freezing substrate temperature. Freezing thus promote splashing!
We will characterize this variation and discuss the new physical mechanisms at play in this splashing regime.
