Stratified flow over a prolate spheroid

ORAL

Abstract

The effect of stratification on the boundary layer and the near wake of a 4:1 prolate spheroid is investigated using highly-resolved large-eddy simulations. The Reynolds number based on the minor axis is $Re=Ud/\nu=10^4$. The effect of stratification, characterized by the Froude number $Fr=U/Nd$, is studied by comparing unstratified ($Fr=\infty$), intermediately stratified ($Fr=3$) and strongly stratified ($Fr=1$) cases .
The results show how flow separation is impacted by stratification so as to affect the force coefficients of the body.
Wake statistics, including turbulent kinetic energy, turbulent potential energy and wake dimensions will be reported. Comparison with a sphere reveals substantial differences; for example, the wake of a sphere is turbulent at $Fr=1$ while that of the prolate spheroid is not.
