Build your Science Trust Toolkit: Moving from Correction to Connection
COFFEE_KLATCH
Abstract
Misinformation about science is prevalent in communities across the United States and globally. As scientists, we play an important role in addressing misinformation, but we must understand effective communication techniques for this issue. Research shows that simply correcting misinformation is insufficient for changing a person's beliefs. In this interactive workshop, we will work on shifting our mindsets from "I need to correct misinformation" to "I need to build trust in scientists." In celebration of the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology, we will focus our examples on quantum misinformation and discuss the nuances of building trust around emerging quantum technologies and research. Participants will practice reflective listening, one useful skill for building trusting relationships. Participants will leave the workshop having added a new tool to their "science trust toolkit."
