Dynamic Rayleigh-Taylor-like Instabilities in BECs

Abstract

Hydrodynamic instabilities are a ubiquitous feature of classical hydrodynamics, though their appearance in superfluids is not fully explored. Instabilities in the nuclear superfluid within a neutron star may be related to the unexplained phenomenon of pulsar glitches, where the rate of rotation of a spinning neutron star suddenly increases despite its continuous loss of angular momentum. In this work, we explore a novel Rayleigh-Taylor-like instability in a two component BEC that appears in both immiscible and miscible regimes. The miscible regime in particular is of interest as it precludes the canonical Rayleigh-Taylor instability.
