Nuclear T-violation measurement using europium ions in a crystal

Abstract
Precision measurements of time-reversal symmetry (T) violation in atoms and molecules have placed stringent limits on new physics beyond the Standard Model. In order to probe new physics at even higher energy scales, we are evaluating the sensitivity of experiments using europium-153 ions doped in a yttrium orthosilicate (YSO) crystal. Eu-153 has an octupole-deformed nucleus that enhances its sensitivity to nuclear T-violation. The non-centrosymmetric YSO crystal additionally provides large effective electric fields, leading to measurable frequency shifts of the europium ion's hyperfine states in response to the T-violating nuclear Schiff moment. I will discuss how we use rf and optical spectroscopy of Eu:YSO to realize a new T-violation measurement.
