Laser-cooled ion crystals in the Fermilab IOTA storage ring: a feasibility study
POSTER
Abstract
We study the feasibility of storing and laser-cooling millions of ions in the Fermilab IOTA ring to form a 1-dimensional Coulomb crystal as a pathway to a large-scale quantum simulation and computation technology. We are developing the full suite of capabilities and techniques to create and study these crystals, as well as to prepare, manipulate and read out quantum states of the ion qubits. We describe our conceptual design of this system as well as the technology and physics challenges that such a system can address, once completed. We focus on ion cooling simulations, diagnostics and modeling for these conceptual studies.
