Bose-Einstein Condensate Gyroscope via a Synthetic Magnetic Field
ORAL
Abstract
The realization of synthetic magnetic fields in a spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate has enabled the observation of vortices and the exploration of topological physics with ultracold atomic gases. In this talk, I will present our recent work on the quadrupole modes of a Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of a synthetic magnetic field. We find that the scissors mode excited in the horizontal plane perpendicular to the direction of the synthetic magnetic field causes an oscillation in the widths of the condensate. More remarkable, the two scissors modes in the vertical planes are also coupled by the synthetic magnetic field, giving rise to interesting gyroscope dynamics. The coupling of these quadrupole modes exhibits different behaviors after vortices appear due to a further increase of the synthetic magnetic field.
