Particle Acceleration in Blazar Jets

ORAL

Abstract

The debate of whether blazar jets significantly accelerate protons that contribute to their high-energy spectra has been ongoing for decades. In 2017, TXS 0506+056 was observed to flare in neutrinos by IceCube and in gamma rays by Fermi-LAT simultaneously. This multimessenger event reinvigorated the debate over blazar jet composition and has led to a proliferation of new leptohadronic models, all attempting to explain the limited data available during multimessenger flares of TXS 0506+056. We present a new model that has been validated with data from 3C 279 and 3C 454.3, which have more complete multiwavelength datasets.. In particular, we constrain the physical parameters associated with particle acceleration in both lepton and photopion dominated scenarios. This enables us to underpin multimessenger debates with an exploration of the source energetics for particle acceleration in blazar jets.
