Overview of the Nab experiment at SNS

ORAL

Abstract

High precision measurement of beta decay observables such as beta-neutrino

correlation coefficient a and Fierz interference term b can be used to explore

physics beyond the standard model. In particular, these measurements can pro-

vide input for unitarity tests of Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) and look

for scalar and tensor currents in the weak interaction. The Nab experiment is

being performed at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) in Oak Ridge National

Lab to measure the a and b parameters in unpolarized free neutron decay with

uncertainty of Δa/a < 10-3 and Δb < 3 × 10-3, respectively. The Nab experiment

is in the final commissioning stage and is planning to take the production data

in 2024. In this talk, we will present Nab’s operation principle, an overview of

the experimental setup, systematics, and outcomes from early commissioning

during 2023.
