Measurement of the Electric Form Factor of Neutron Using Recoil Polarimetry

ORAL

Abstract

The SBS Collaboration at Jefferson Lab is going to measure the ratio of electric to magnetic form factors (GEn/GMn) of neutron using recoil polarization method. We will collect the data using a longitudinally polarized 4.3 GeV electron beam impinging on a liquid deuterium target and analyze the quasi-elastic electron-neutron scattering events to quantify the polarization transfer from electrons to recoiling neutrons. We will utilize both the (np → np) and the charge exchange (np → pn) scattering techniques to extract neutron polarizations utilizing two different analyzers. Ultimately, the GEn/GMn ratio will be extracted from the ratio of transverse to longitudinal spin polarizations of recoil neutron. If the experiment confirms the expected large analyzing power using the charge exchange technique at Q2 = 4.4 GeV2, then this will allow measurements of the neutron form factor at even much higher Q2 in the future experiments. In this talk, I will present the motivation and physics formalism, and also discuss the readiness of various SBS subsystems for this measurement.
