Developing an assessment of physics teacher preparation programs: DASI-P
POSTER
Abstract
In December 2019, the AAAS published a commissioned report, ``A Synthesis of Research on and Measurement of STEM Teacher Preparation.'' The authors of the report argue that common measures are required to move the field of STEM teacher preparation forward, particularly those that assess STEM teacher preparation programs, noting that there is virtually ''no published research related to the improvement of educator preparation programs.'' This need exists not only in secondary teacher preparation, but for instructional- and learning-assistant (LA) programs in undergraduate teaching as well: while a range of instruments examine the effects that LAs have on undergraduate learning, none specifically examine LA programs through the lens of LAs' own developing knowledge of teaching. We report on the design and status of a selected-response assessment to measure the success of physics teacher preparation programs in supporting attentiveness to student ideas -- that is, the ability to interpret and respond to students' scientific ideas.
