Animating the Science: Astro2020 DEIA Priorities, Actions, and Opportunities
ORAL · Invited
Abstract
The National Academies 2020 Decadal Review of Astronomy and Astrophysics (Astro2020) was the seventh of its kind, charting a clear course for the scientific priorities of coming decade. It was also the first to successfully include a full panel review reflecting on the human foundation that animates this great endeavor. The Panel on the State of the Profession and Societal Impacts was charged to review current demographics, diversity and inclusion efforts, workplace climate, workforce development, education, public outreach, and relevant areas of public policy, and then make concrete, actionable suggestions. The final report made it plain that in order to address these issues we must invest in a well organized, multi-faceted, intentional approach at all levels. In this talk, I will give an overarching summary of this report and discuss the underlying framework that informed our suggestions. I will then discuss ways in which each of us is well poised to implement these suggestions, to transform science culture, and to cultivate a thriving and diverse community of scientists.
