Design 4 Remote: What happens when we can’t get hands on?

As nuclear science increases in energy the ability to maintain facilities hands-on will become increasingly limited and may require a wholesale move to remote operations. We have seen this with the European Spallation Source Active Cell Facility which is a 12m by 12m by 12m windowless hotcell that must be operated, maintained and upgraded remotely throughout its life. We also expect this for a fusion power plant. Rob’s talk will look at recent developments in robotics for hazardous environments looking at JET, the fusion reactor at Culham, ITER and ESS.
