Measurements of the CKM angle $\beta$ with charmonium and penguin $B$ decays

Abstract
We report on recent measurements of the CKM angle $\beta$ with samples of $B$ decays to charmonium final states and charmless final states. The former are dominated by tree decay amplitudes whereas the latter are dominated by penguin-loop amplitudes. The standard model predicts the time-dependent mixing-induced CP-asymmetries in these two different types of decays to be the same in leading order and to be proportional to $\sin 2\beta$. A comparison of the measured values for $\sin 2\beta$ obtained from charmonium and penguin decays will be presented.
